New notebooks for Noodoll

I have recently created a new range of 6 pocket notebooks in collaboration with Noodoll, featuring characters from the 'zany zoo', a colourful menagerie of quirky animal/object combinations. These handy A6 sized notebooks are perfect for carrying in your pocket so you are ready to jot down those important notes at all times! Prints for Fifty50 art

I have recently released two prints through Fifty 50 art - this rather vertiginous staircase-legged flamingo, and secondly, my menagerie of animals wearing designer jumpsuits! Both are available to buy through the Fifty50 art website, at various different sizes. Take a look!

The Caterpillar

The Caterpillar is a new arts and literature magazine for children aged 7 - 11 and the summer issue is out now. It is brilliantly quirky and very funny with an old fashioned feel.  With short stories, and poems such as 'A poem which aims to dissuade you from bringing your horse to Tesco' and 'A week in the life of Mr Potato head' it is a great and entertaining read. It includes work by Michael Morpurgo, Andrew Kaufman, Julie O'Callaghan and lots more. I was happy to be asked to contribute some illustrations - these were originally done for Food and Wine magazine, but seem to fit in with the feel of the Caterpillar rather well! Work for EMI

Here are two recent CD cover designs I have produced for EMI music. The Christmas one was done back in August when the weather was warm and sunny and the Olympics were on in the background. Seems so long ago now! Both are promotional CDs of incidental mood music that are sent out to production companies for them to use in their ads or programmes.

The Art of Science

Julia Rothman's new book 'The Where, the Why, and the How' is a science book like no other. It features artwork by 75 artists who have illustrated their answers to some of life's big questions: 'What existed before the big bang?', 'Where did life come from?', and 'Why do we age?' Each image is presented alongside an essay written by a scientist who explains the answers. My question was 'How do migrating birds and animals find their way back home?' Alex Gershenson explains that they do so in variety of ways - from using the stars for navigation, using the earth's magnetic fields, or in the case of sea turtles, by following almost indistinguishable traces of soil. The book is out now and is launched a week today in New York. 

Illustration for Food and Wine magazine

A duck with a flat cap, a pigeon in a headscarf and a swordfish with a walking stick?! Here's my recent illustration for Food and Wine magazine (USA) about Aging meat, which is out this month. The article is about bringing out the flavours of meat and fish by aging them in different ways. I wanted a fun, quirky take on the aging process, hence all the references to old age - walking sticks, slippers etc! 

Stationery for Noodoll!

I recently collaborated with Noodoll on a series of stationery designs for the Noodoll's friends range, born to celebrate friendship and creativity. Together we created two double sided journals featuring animal characters from the 'Zany zoo', plus a range of 4 notebooks. Journals feature two zany zoo postcards that you can cut out and keep or send, and notebooks have a cloth binding and tactile embossed details!

Noodoll is the brainchild of designer and author YiYing Wang, who created the World of Noodoll as part of her MA course in Communication Design at Central Saint Martin’s, London (also where we met!). CIA calendar image

This week is my week in my Agency's (CIA) calendar on the theme 'If I were....' My answer (a bit weirdly) was 'If I were an anagram' - 'surreal slither' being an anagram of my name. I've simply produced an image inspired by these words, an elephant with a slithering snake for a trunk.

Animals in Jumpsuits!

Brazilian Fashion magazine Lola asked me to contribute to their 'sketchbook' section, where each month a different illustrator draws on and around photographs of different clothing or accessories. For some reason animals wearing designer jumpsuits seemed like a good idea!

Italian table linen

You could eat your dinner off it!

More spaghetti – but this time on a tablecloth… twisting and turning until it becomes an elephant’s trunk, or a giraffe’s tail…. Flat design are a new company based in Italy who produce 100% linen tablecloths, runners, napkins, placemats and so on. For their first collection they have asked a number of designers and artists to contribute designs to be printed or embroidered on the linen – this is mine. The collection will be launched next month at a furniture fair in Milan. Exciting!
